My motto: Exclusion ends in violence. Inclusion
ends in justified election.
In case, the concerned Eritrean politicians, turn their face from violence
to election and from abusing words of defame to constructive dialogue,
here follows topics of interest to the coming election for elaboration
and eventually for taking stands. The following five topics are chosen
for the time being, understanding that with time they can be exhausted
and diversified to include additional an interest of agendas. My aim
is to explore for further consultations and correspondence with concerned
people, so that, at the end we to have a general concept or a general
consensus of understanding not necessarily one view, but diversified
view with common background.
1. Official language versus working language.
In Eritrea the constitution puts it with uncertainty that it is, “working
language” and not “official language” declared. The chairperson of the
constitution commission defended the choice of working language as a
consensus that was acceptable to the majority of the constitution commission
members. He was not able to present it logically, at the same time;
he didn’t elaborate it scientifically, so that, at the end of the day
opponents would not get chance to refute it. Saying so, even to this
time, except those die hard opposition against the working language,
the advocates of the official language presses only for its application
without a reasonable, logical or scientific analysis for their case.
They simply say in Eritrea it has to be official language.
First, I am going to expose the hidden agenda of the advocates for the
declaration of the official language and later on I ma going to declare
my stand about it. The majority, who advocates for official language
are those who have an interest in the dominance of Arabic language,
against the widely used among the highlanders, the Christian people,
working language, Tigrigna and some minority Moslem community. This
time, the balance and harmony between the Christian and the Moslem people
in Eritrea is due to the tolerance and acceptance of both the religious
groups by the statuesque established during the colonial times. This
statuesque between the Christian and Moslem population in Eritrea is
a natural gift and it has to be preserved all the time. External artificial
barriers that tilt the statuesque to the advantage of the other group
should not disturb the respect and protection among the Eritrean people.
Declaring Arabic language as an official language gives an advantage
and more power to the sectarian Moslem groups and will disturb the equality,
the statuesque and harmony between the Christian and the Moslem community.
For the Christian people learning Arabic language could be like an imposition,
the same Amahric was imposed against the Eritrean people. I prefer to
learn Arabic by will than by imposition. Don’t forget that if Arabic
is declaring as an official language then it will be obligatory to learn
it. If you cannot Arabic then you miss all the opportunity for modern
life in Eritrea. You cannot get job in official offices. You cannot
do business officially, because all that must be done by the officially
language Arabic. You can imagine how suppressing and frustrating will
be for the Christian people. Among the Christian people only the brilliant
like Mr Hirue Tedla and President Iseyas will survive. A person like
me who is naturally gifted in mathematics but not in language will be
in misery. Let me give you an example. If any office of the Eritrean
government announces a job vacancy, I fail to have it, because I can’t
Arabic. To be honest with you I tried my best even from my childhood
to learn Arabic, I didn’t managed. Even now, her in Norway, I have difficult
with the Norwegian language. Like me, I believe that, there are thousands
who are not gifted in language but compensated in other fields. For
example, a person like me, who had low grades in language but compensated
it with the top grades in mathematics, would prefer mathematics to be
an official language than Arabic. Look how weak I am in language to
say mathematics is language.
My argument is let the Arabic language be a working language, but not
an official language. By doing Arabic working language, those who are
dependent on it, they can have the right to make use of it to their
advantage. Since Tigrigna is not an official language there will not
be a must requirement in Eritrea for those who wants to use Arabic.
Therefore, when I oppose Arabic and Tigrigna to be an official language
I base my argument in the talents and natural gifts of an individual
Eritrean. If Eritrea is going to be for all in equality then the few
and privileged linguistic persons should not get the advantage by declaring
Arabic and Tigrigna as an official language. At the same time it is
the duty and responsibility for those who believes in harmony, equality,
stability and tranquillity in Eritrea not to disturb by imposing artificial
obstacles like the language issue that disturbs the power of one religious
group upon the other. For those who insist Arabic to be an official
language my message is I am against suppression by imposition.
2. Question of Land.
In Eritrea, it is declared that land is of the state. I think it seems
unnatural especially in Eritrea to dissociate people from land and give
it to the state. I my self, accepted the decalartion of land to be owned
by the state after the differnt clashes that resulted to deathes in
certain sectores of our country. That is one aspect, but the major issue
was based on the idleness of the land simply owned by the people. It
was long generation and deferment colonizers, didn’t separated the ownership
of the Eritrean people and the land it possessed. We all know the result.
There was no development and effective use of the land. The majority
migrated to the towns and abroad and the rest were not this much interested
to make use of it efficiently. As I mentioned above, it simply, the
land, became a means of quarrel. Even though the government declared
the land to be owned by the state, it didn’t denied the right allocation
of the necessary land to the owners. I mention examples that made use
of the declaration. In Adi Gadade, the people sold half of the plot
given to them and managed to construct modern residence houses. Besides
that, small manufacturing plants are established there. Practically
the declaration of the land to be owned by the state has effectively
worked in Eritrea. There is no negative outcome up to now and I hope
the positive trend to continue. For those who advocates that, land should
not be declared to be owned by the state, they are expected to document
the negative consequence of the otherwise to the declaration.
3. Power sharing.
The fundamental of democracy is power sharing and I declare from the
out set that monopoly of power is unacceptable and I support power sharing
according to the result of the ballots in election poll. In Eritrea,
I see the issue of power sharing from two different perspectives. The
one perspective is the complete democratisation of Eritrea and the other
one is the dictatorship due to given circumstances. The complete democratisation
is hard, complicated and asks great effort to achieve it. For demoralization
in Eritrea to succeed and the eventuality of power sharing to be satisfied
the though tasks are reconciliation using the inclusion method and pushing
forward for an all-inclusive platform on the saying and shaping of the
future of Eritrea. The opposition groups die hardness to remove the
Eritrean government in one hand and the unwilling to come to dialogue
with the opposition groups by the government on the other hand makes
it difficult to pursue the process of democratisation. This time, power
sharing is becoming far distant and the alternative is dictatorship.
May be it will be difficult for you to understand what good could result
comes out from dictatorship, but I tell you to save Eritrea from this
uncertain democratisation it is better to have a stable dictatorship.
I say better to be like Malaysia than Sri Lanka. Figure it out by your
self.
Still, we don’t give up and we are not doomed for democratisation as
failure in Eritrea. If the opposition groups and the Eritrean government
comes to their sense and use inclusion method as a means of democratisation
then there is the possibility of an all inclusive power sharing in Eritrea.
As long as the opposition groups are working to remove the existing
government it is only violence that is going to follow.
4. National wealth distribution
This time, in Eritrea the trend of national wealth distribution is not
that much of ambiguous issue. First and utmost, the present government
took positive measures to distribute the national wealth fairly to the
whole country. I don’t think, this time, there is of suspicion of discrimination
or special privileges to separate region or groups. May be the affair
of the Red Sea corporation could be of some doubts to the national wealth
distribution. But to my understanding the action of the government against
corruption would rectify the damage done in the past and will be of
great lesson in the future not to repeat like the mistake done on Red
Sea corporation.
For the future, great care should be taken not to concentrate the national
wealth of the country at the hands of few selfish money breeders. Priority
should be given to manufacturers and producers than to pure merchants.
The periphery of the country has to march the same foot with the centre
of the country. I hope, more to hear from economists on this subject.
5. Diversity of development project.
We have witnessed enough of the diversity of the development projects
in Eritrea by the existing government. The construction of roads from
Asmara to Massawa, Asmara to Keren, and Massaw to Assab and other routs
in side the country is a live witness of the diversity o development
projects. Not only roads, manufacturing plants in Tessenie, Decmehare,
Mendefera, Massawa and other places are tangible results of diversity
of development projects. The constructed schools and Hospitals through
out the country are good examples to be mentioned. In this aspect the
existing government has to be applauded and encouraged. I don’t believe
that the opposition groups would do better than the existing government.
Conclusion, my stand on declaring Arabic and Tigrigna as an official
language fails to fill my stomach. Partly because of fear to the disturbing
of the present statuesque in Eritrea, partly due to there founds no
reasonable argument from the those who advocates fro Arabic to be an
official language. For some may be easy to learn different language
at the same time, but not all. My argument is based on talent and capacity
of mentality to grasp different language at the same time.
I support the land to be under the state. The land was for long time
under community ownership. Except quarrel and war among the communities
in one hand and families on the other hand, it didn’t produced promising
resulted in the past. Those who advocates for the land to be on private
ownership should document the negative consequence of the present system
and argue logically of the advantage under private ownership.
I am for power sharing. The opposition groups should accept the existence
of the present government and include in the future as well. The opposition
groups should drop removing the present government by any means. The
Eritrean government should accept the existence of the opposition groups
and should work for an all-inclusive platform. If an all-incisive platform
seems difficult the alternative is dictatorship and it has to be welcomed.
National wealth distribution and diversity of project development are
much of practical deeds, which have to be adored and encouraged by the
government.
Finally, the above-mentioned are my point of view and I am the sole
responsible for it. If any body logically convinces me that I am wrong,
I am ready to dismiss totally or partially if it is necessary or modify
as deems necessary. I am flexible for change. What I ask is simply logical
argument.
God bless Eritrea
