Asmara, 9 September 2005 -
The Eritrean government has purchased 380 new heavy load trucks in a bid to facilitating development endeavors in food security and infrastructure works.

The trucks along with different agricultural implements and spare parts were purchased at a cost of USD 36 million based on the cooperation agreement concluded between the Eritrean and Italian governments in August 2004 in Rome. The loan thus secured for the purchase of the trucks is long-term one with low interest rate.

12 governmental institutions in general and the ministries of agriculture and public works in particular are expected to actively employ the trucks in development programs being implemented in all the administrative regions.

Dr. Matias Woldu, Economic Advisor and Coordinator of the program in the Ministry of National Development, received the trucks and other items yesterday from the Italian Ambassador to Eritrea, Mr. Emanuele Pignateli. Commending the Italian government for the loan, Dr. Matias noted that the trucks would play a significant role in the nation’s development programs.
